BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY WALKS
We're surrounded by stunning moorland, woodland, river and seaside walks, making for great days out in all weathers. From the rolling hills of Princetown to the meandering River Tamar as it passes Cotehele, there's something for everyone not too far away from The Old Sunday School. Our favourite treks include Kit Hill, Tamar Trails, Brentor, Rame Head and Cardinham Woods.
LEARN TO SURF
Tucked away in South East Cornwall’s stunning ‘Forgotten Corner’, Adventure Bay is just 40 minutes drive from us, based at Tregonhawke Beach Whitsand Bay. Adventure Bay has built a solid reputation as one of the UK’s most exciting and unique surf schools, offering quality watersport experiences with a personal touch. If you're planning to head to the north coast, then Westcountry Surf School also runs surfing lessons from the beautiful destination of Watergate Bay.
THE WHITE HART
The White Hart in Chilsworthy is a friendly, welcoming, dog-friendly, traditional free house, with a unique view overlooking the Tamar Valley towards Devon. The White Hart was recently featured on Tom Kerridge's BBC production "Saving Britain's Pubs" where Landlords Amy and Ian gave a fascinating insight into the trials and tribulations of pub life. Booking in advance is recommended during the warmer months as the pub can get very busy!
PADDLEBOARDING
Imagine yourself quietly cruising the flat water of The River Tamar, taking in the calmness of the natural beauty that surrounds you. Paddleboarding is a fun and fascinating way to see the river from another perspective. It's also easy to learn and brilliant therapy for the body and mind. Mai Adventures are based only 20 minutes from us at Cargreen and offer lessons and expeditions up and down The River Tamar and various other river and coastal locations. KIT HILL
The highest point in the Tamar Valley is 5 minutes' drive from us and has over 400 acres of heathland to explore. It's completely dog-friendly and is also home to the infamous Louis Tea Rooms and Engine House at Compton Park, which both serve up decent eat-in and takeaway food with breathtaking views. Kit Hill Country Park shows how humans have worked minerals on marginal upland since the stone age. Located in the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Kit Hill is a distinctive outcrop of the great granite mass that runs under the whole of Cornwall. The area is rich in archaeology from a Neolithic long barrow to 19th-century mining remains, and is also home to a rare array of animal and plant life.
WHITSAND BAY
The beaches of Whitsand Bay offer over three miles of stunning golden sand from Polhawn Fort to Portwrinkle and are considered one of Cornwall’s hidden gems. At low tide, the long unbroken stretches provide great walking or jogging opportunities, whilst the varying swell keeps paddleboarders, kayakers and surfers happy, riding some beautiful Atlantic waves. Rockpools dotted along the beach reveal fascinating marine life, and out to sea the bay is a popular dive site, home to HMS Scylla, an ex-naval frigate sunk in 2004 to form an artificial reef. Lifeguards are on station at various points along the beach between May and September.
THE CARPENTERS ARMS
Aka The Carps - a lovely 15th-century pub located in the picturesque neighbouring village of Metherell. This beautiful family-friendly and welcoming pub is full of character and atmosphere. The Carps serve up quality pub food and also offer a takeaway service if you're looking for a lazy night in with your feet up watching a movie here. The pub is also renowned for making a serious effort with live music and themed nights, so keep an eye on their Facebook page for upcoming events.
CROOKED INN
The Crooked Inn is a family run traditional country pub & hotel which has been trading for over 30 years. Set within 10 acres of the beautiful countryside of Trematon, the popular pub has stunning valley views, making it the perfect getaway for a lunchtime meal. The Crooked Inn is very dog-friendly and also has resident ducks to keep you company if you're dining alfresco.
TAVISTOCK'S RESTAURANTS
If fine dining is your thing, then Tavistock has a multitude of diverse and high-quality restaurants along with its share of character pubs too. Our favourites include Church Lane (featured in the photo), The Cornish Arms, Robertsons Pizzeria, Taylors, Thariks Tandoori and The Bedford Hotel. Tavistock is an ancient and beautiful market town based on the edge of Dartmoor National Park, so you could combine a moorland or riverside walk with some quality food and drink, and perhaps a nose around some of the artisan independent shops that occupy its high street.
